How To Keep The Vacation Alive Long After You're Home

How to Keep the Vacation Alive Long after You're Home

(ARA) - There's something about summer travel that makes you wish the vacation could last forever.

Whether it's balmy temperatures that set the stage for a great getaway, or the pleasure of relaxing before the hectic pace of the school year and winter holidays begins, summer vacation holds great allure for most Americans. In fact, 54 percent of travelers in a TripAdvisor survey said they planned to spend at least half their annual vacation time on a summer trip.

While the vacation - and summer - can't go on forever, it is possible to keep the memories alive in your home throughout the year. Here are some ideas for preserving the memories and spirit of your summer vacation:

* Stage a family "Vacation Recreation" night. Get everyone together and serve a meal of foods and beverages you enjoyed on (or associate with) your vacation. Play games that you enjoyed while on vacation. For example, if you took a cruise and participated in an onboard talent competition, have each family member recreate his/her performance. Decorate the house with images and souvenirs from your special trip.

* Create and share a virtual album. Long gone are the days when loved ones had to wait for the returned traveler to make and mail prints of vacation photos. Today, photo-sharing Web sites like PhotosYourWay.com make it easier than ever to savor and share visual reminders of your vacation. When choosing a photo-sharing site, look for lots of free storage capacity (PhotosYourWay provides 7 GB of free storage), flexible organizing features, and sharing capability that allows you to e-mail images directly to friends and family, create a community where your images can be viewed by not only your loved ones but other Internet users who may share your interests, and the ability for those who share your photos to download the images and print them on their own.

* Decorating with reminders of your vacation doesn't have to be limited to photographs or "dust-catchers" that can clutter your house. For really unique reminders of your trip, frame unusual items - such as a collection of boarding passes, attraction stubs and event programs. For three-dimensional items, use shadowboxes to create wall art. You can even turn your favorite vacation snapshot into a custom wallpaper mural. MuralsYourWay.com will place your vacation photograph on an easy-to-hang wallpaper mural sized to your specifications.

* Cash in on your vacation photos - literally. PhotosYourWay.com, currently allow users to sell images online to third parties, like advertising or public relations agencies, online publishers and others who need stock photography. To make money from your vacation photos, simply designate them for public viewing - and available for rent - during the upload process. The images will be funneled through PhotosYourWay's sister site, ImagesYourWay.com, where clients who need a steady stream of fresh, quality images will have the chance to view and rent them. You will pocket 60 percent of the rental price for your photo - as much as $180 in some cases. To learn more about organizing and sharing your vacation photos, visit www.PhotosYourWay.com.

* Buy the bedding or bed - really. If a great hotel experience was part of what made your vacation special, you'll be happy to know that many hotel chains now allow you to buy products like those used in their guest rooms. Some hotels will sell the bedding, pillows or even the mattresses used in their rooms. Others offer copies of wall art or décor. Bath amenities - from shampoo to bathrobes - are also often available for purchase.

* Finally, to keep the memories alive, plan ahead while you're on vacation and seek the truly unique personal souvenir. Look for items that will remind you of the people you met while on vacation. For example, trade key chains with the bellman at your hotel or the waiter who served you on your cruise. If your teenager makes friends with another kid on the beach, suggest they swap email addresses. Ask the people you meet to exchange some personal item. Be prepared to give something of value - other than just cash - in return.
